Portuguese Easter Bread in Newark

Take a look at this beautiful little Easter bread we purchased at Riviera, a Portuguese bakery in Newark's Ironbound section. (In case you're a trivia buff, the name "Ironbound" came about because the neighborhood was enclosed, or "bound" by railroad tracks.)

In Portugal, the Easter breads range from sweet to salty, depending on the region. Whole eggs, complete with shell, are baked inside. This one has just a whisper of sweetness, beautifully browned crust and two pastel colored eggs. While you're at Riviera, try the custard cups and the fantastic cappucino.
